The Cave

As you leave the gallery and turn right, (west) you enter a long hall that leads to the west wing.

The first door on the left is a very masculine antique door.  This door came off of a Cabana in the South Seas.

Behind this door is "The Cave".

You open the door and realize this is not a bedroom.  It is, what the designer calls, a "mans cave".  Having read about, and understanding, that a man needs his own place, she designed this “cave” for the man in the home.  Most homes are designed only for what a woman wants or needs.  This designer has tried to incorporate both worlds into this home, so it truly can be a place where both sexes will be comfortable and feel at home.  (Notice to the ladies.  It can also be used as a sewing or hobby room, but don't tell the gentlemen.)

This room is not very large in comparison to most of the rooms in the home.  It’s designed to be cozy.  To allow someone to gain perspective.  The wood in this room is all Oak.

At the back of the room stands a large, built-in, humidor.  This humidor came out of an underground illegal gambling place in  Alabama.  The designer got it from the original owner's grandson.  He said his grandfather ran booze and a gambling hall, all underground.  This piece is all that is left.  After being completely refinished, every thing works and is perfect for the man who smokes cigars.  If he does not smoke, it still is a great conversation piece.

The room has a built in coffee pot, which you can see part of in the picture above, so good coffee is always close at hand.  A small refrigerator is here to keep the cold drinks handy.

Shelves line the north wall to hold reading material, cd's, DVD's, and/or collector items the gentleman favors.

Smaller shelves are on the south wall, built for holding cd’s.  Place a music system in this room and he can listen to the music he likes while he reads, works, contemplates challenges or just unwinds from his day.

The northeast corner has a fireplace to keep the room cozy on a cold winter night.  Above the fireplace a television can be added so he can watch his "shoot'em up" cowboy movies, sports or whatever he prefers.  As you can see in the picture, the floor is tile so it will be easy to clean.

An antique set of saloon doors, over 100 years old, divides the cave from the small half bath.  These doors came from a saloon in Texas and offer another item to give this room a masculine appearance.

Therefore, one does not have to leave this room even if they have the need to visit the "little boy's room".  The bath is done in ultramodern which gives the area a very unique appearance.  A vintage light fixture, considered very modern for it's time, lights the area.

The unusual design on the walls of the bath have rectangles and ovals of mirrored stainless steel.

The stainless steel gives this bath an unusual appearance as well as making it appear larger.  Another remarkable idea from the designer.

A commode rests in the southeast cornerl and just beside a space saving, yet very modern, corner sink  The top of the vanity is covered in Israeli tiles.  It is surrounded by another piece of the mirrored stainless steel.

The north wall has a "closet" that is almost not noticed.

Across from the "necessary" items is the small closet, built to hold the necessities.  It blends in with the walls so much, it goes un-noticed.  The closet contains shelves and even a small safe resides here.

The room only has one window, a large octagonal one that is close to the southwest corner.

A chair placed here would allow the occupant to gaze out at the lake or enjoy the fireplace and/or television.  A can light has been placed above this area for reading.  A small table placed in the center of the room would be the perfect place for a game of chess.

The ceiling is covered in Oak and is slanted so it is quite high on the north side.  This gives a very open feeling to the room.  The place above the shelves is a perfect place to hang pictures.  A ceiling fan glides in the center of the room.  The blades were custom designed to go with this room.  You notice a vent very high on the west wall.  This is the personal attic fan for this room.  Here you can enjoy air conditioning, open the outside door and enjoy the fresh air, and, when needed, use the ceiling fan and/or the attic fan to keep air moving,

There is a large old oak antique door on the south side of the room.  It resembles a Hobbit door except much larger, of course.

Opening the door reveals a large private balcony.  The view from here is astounding!  Three stories high, you are in the tree tops.

What a wonderful place to come to when you want to relax.  What a glorious location from which to enjoy nature.  What a perfect place to commune and put an end to a hectic day.

Now gentlemen, you have your own space!
